Looking at the increased incidence of divorce among young couples in India and the fear of many getting misguided or no advice on Family law matters, Advocate Purvi Shah has dedicated her Free Advice week to Divorce and Family Law matters this time. Advocate Purvi Shah is among the best and highly acclaimed lawyers in the country and not everyone can afford her advice. So she conducts Free Advice Week on frequent basis and also takes up a few cases Pro-Bono. “A lot of times life brings in legal situations at the most inapt times from an economic perspective” she said. While she usually keeps her Free Advice Weeks open to all types of cases, most her pro-bono work is for people from lower economic segment of the society.
But not everyone who cannot afford her is from the economically weaker strata of the society. “One of the women who came to me was from a very rich family, travelled in a D segment sedan and carried the latest i-phone. She could shop using a credit card all she wanted, but she did not have any cash to pay. Her parents were not willing to support and the moment she would have spoken of divorce, her husband would have stopped her out of everything. I just couldn’t believe how trapped and vulnerable she was despite external appearance of wealth and power” said Purvi. So she took her case for no money and on settlement when the client got a hefty sum of money, refused to take any fees saying client should use the money to help others less fortunate.
Such situations are the focus of this Free Advice Week. Many middle/upper middle class people who have a family related issue need advice on their rights but are either unable to pay, or not sure they have any rights and just go by hearsay “If these people face lack of awareness and proper advice, they can be denied justice as much as someone from weaker sections of the society” she said. Divorce, especially is an area of frequent mis-information and half baked hearsay theories and it is best that anyone who is either thinking if they should get divorced or if they are looking to simply know what their rights are, goes to her and gets proper advice.
