Can probiotic supplements function as well as antibiotics in dealing with bacterial infections and with pathogenic bacteria? This is a question that many people are asking lately because as you may know, probiotic bacteria can work similarly to how probiotics work but not identical or in the same way. Probiotic bacteria were first discovered in 1905 by a man called Élie Metchnikoff which was a famous Russian scientist that also won a Nobel award for discovering white blood cells and their role in the human immune system. I am not sure of the details but what led him to discover probiotic bacteria was simply observing villagers in certain Bulgarian villages and noticing how healthy they are and the long lives that they would lead.
On average these individuals would live longer and healthier lives than an average person and he began to wonder what was it that helped them live such healthy and long lives and he associated their long and healthy lives with their regular consumption of yogurt which as some of you might know, contains many strains of bacteria, healthy bacteria and not the kind that can cause disease, infection, death, etc.
He studied and analyzed these bacteria and came to the conclusion that they are healthy and come with many health benefits and so he suggested to use them to colonize the human body. Now, the human body already contains many bacteria from foods like yogurt but also the environment, soil, air, water and so on. Not all of them are good and those that are bad are a risk to our health. We could use these probiotics to colonize the body and throw the bad ones into a corner, reducing their numbers and inhibiting their growth. More good bacteria and less bad ones are ideal for a better overall health.
This is amazing because it could mean a much smaller risk of infection, which is why some have nicknamed probiotic bacteria as the future of preventive medicine. They are already very popular and I am using probiotic supplements myself, Nucific Bio X4 and I highly recommend it to those of you that are reading this as well. Probiotic supplements use bacteria that have been grown by humans in labs, safe environments using vegetable mediums or dairy mediums and are carefully selected for their safety and potential for health.
