The island was divided into 13 quadrants where the rangers were allotted their specific areas. They were trained to make use of the GPS. The mission was to make note of the number of land iguanas present on the island. Like every year, the officials usually count the total number of existing animals of different species. This helps in knowing the rate of population growth and also to identify the endangered species.
The study carried out on this 1.83 square kilometer island was done in such a way that the rangers were asked to record the location, gender and age of every iguana that they come across. There were a total of about 2483 iguanas, out of which 1117 were females, 873 males and 493 juveniles. The survey was carried on successfully and the officials said that this number shows population stability of the iguanas here on the island.
