Just as we use different tools for different jobs both in our homes and our professional capacities, manufacturers have developed different machines to suit specific scenarios in the workplace. A side loader, as its name suggests, electric lifters lift loads from the side, unlike the standard forklift truck which, as we all know, lifts loads from the front. There are several reasons for the development of the sideloader, the most obvious of which is the need to transport long loads such as steel girders, pipes or long containers over short distances and to place them in and remove them from storage. The ability to carry loads length ways and thus not drastically increasing the width of the vehicle you are driving with the load you are carrying, gives the side loader a great advantage in most modern storage spaces where aisles are narrow. Combine this with a very small turning circle and the side loader becomes the perfect solution to many warehousing and storage needs. Carrying loads in this way also allows for increased stability in transportation, as the load is placed on the vehicle's platform, centralising the weight of the load and not carrying it out in front and unbalancing the vehicle as would be the case with a standard forklift.
The increased safety features don't stop there however. Driver visibility is also increased due to the load being at the side of the vehicle and not in the driver's line of sight, which is also greatly improved. Taking all of these great features into account, along with the fact that we are far more likely to see a front loading forklift in use in most modern warehousing, you could be forgiven for thinking that they were a relatively new invention. However the first incarnation of the side loader was manufactured as long ago as 1953 by the German company Irion.
Electric lifters were initially sold only in Italy, but soon they entered the German market, competing directly with Irion. At this time Wolfgang Baumann, owner of a very successful timber business, felt he could improve and what was being offered and began manufacture of his own machines. Some years later the Baumann Company introduced their own range of side loaders to the burgeoning market starting their manufacturing plant in Cavaion - a plant that is still owned and run today by Wolfgang Baumann.
