Stainless steel can be a challenge to keep oxidation free. In many cases the stainless steel used for your appliances/etc is a low grade "plate type" with little to no nickle, making it susceptible to oxidation(rust) over time.Cleaning Tips
• For heavy duty cleaning use an acid based stainless steel cleaner such as Barkeepers Friend or Spartan Chemical Foamy QA - both have stronger acids that are also safe around stainless steel. Note - citric acid doesn't count for heavy duty cleaning.
• For routine cleaning use an oil based stainless steel cleaner that also contains citric acid. Citric acid helps with passively "pacifying" the stainless steel - a process that protects it from rust. Do not use cheap water based stainless steel cleaners. A good product - even though it's not sold for stainless steel - is Orange Glo.
Protection
• Keep your stainless steel away from strong acids such as HCL (found in toilet bowl cleaner)
• Don't use bleach
• Hold off on the windex - windex will reduce stainless steel capacity to protect itself from oxidation
