25 July, 2017, Kolkata: Scientifically called Areca catechu, is a medium or small sized, single trunked, evergreen and monoecious tree that does well especially in tropical as well as sub-tropical climates with well-drained soil. According to the climate, the plant grows up to the height of 20 m and 20-30 cm in diameter. It has pinnate leaves measuring 1.5-2 cm long and it bears creamy to white flowers as well.
Fruit is an ovoid drupe which is about 4-5 cm long and it can be yellowish to red or orange. The seeds inside the fruit are ovoid, ellipsoidal, globose measuring 3-4×2-4 cm.
It contains isoguvocine, choline and alkaloids arecaine, arecoline, arecaidine and Guvacine.
Nut contains tannin, oil, alkaloids, and polyphenols such as flavonoids. Other alkaloids found in it are arecaidine, arecolidine, guvacoline, guvacine, norarecoline and isoguvacine norarecaidine.

• Reduce Bad Mouth Smell:
Using of Areca nut powder daily in minimal quantity will reduce bad mouth smell.
• Strengthen the Tooth:
Chewing Areca nut will st lengthen the tooth and also it in activates taste buds in your tongue.
• Stomach Worm Problem:
Powdered Areca nut will work for people having stomach worm problem. Drinking a glass of milk mixed with ½ spoon Areca nut powders and honey will help to overcome this problem.

Chewing the nut stimulates the flow of saliva to aid digestion. Betel nut also has been used to stimulate the appetite. People having dry mouth problem can use Betel nut as it stimulates the flow of saliva.
