ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE is a program conceived by Rotary International to enable interested and qualified high school students to experience a different educational system, learn how to live with people of different cultures, and serve as an ambassador for their country, and also have fun. The Rotarians who sponsor and manage the program are an association of people from different backgrounds in over 33,000 clubs around the globe. Since the beginning of the program, they have been conducting almost 10,000 student exchanges annually, and they provide a level playing field for all applicants during the selection process. In response to a query about their services, the spokesperson of ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE commented, “Our exchange programs are managed locally, and a local Rotary club and district must sponsor all applicants. We have our platform in almost all countries and geographical areas, and youth exchanges occur in nearly all of them. However, all interested applicants are to note that each district has its application and selection process”.
ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE has a study abroad program, a long-term exchange program that lasts for a full academic year. Eligible students for this program will attend school in their country of exchange and will also live with 2-3 families during their stay there. The whole essence of this is to ensure that they build their knowledge about the culture and traditions of their host country. They also pay a monthly stipend to every student with counselors attached to them to get the full benefits of the program. The spokesperson of ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE further commented, “We also do not condone any form of abuse against any participant of our youth exchange program. Thus, all Rotarians, Rotarians spouses and partners, and other volunteers must comply with our policies that set the safety of the youths as our main priority”.
At ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE, they have reduced the cost of their programs by making available a scholarship program which covers tuition and school fees, monthly stipends, room and board for one academic year, among others. This is to ensure that students from low-income families can also participate in the program. About their gap year abroad schedule, seniors in high school who will graduate the following spring can also participate so long as they will not be more than 19 years of age by the time of departure after graduation. More so, this program poses no difficulties, as there are no academic credits required from their high school to qualify for the program.
